Sports Massage fundamentally alleviates the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. The role of the Sports Massage Therapist has never been greater than it is today. We have increased leisure time and keeping fit has never had such a high profile. This has brought demands for new leisure activities. More sports activities create more injuries. The more we learn about injuries and injury prevention the more we realise the need to keep the athlete fit and healthy and the belief that prevention is better than cure.
One of the differences in treating sports injuries as opposed to other injuries is the frequency of treatment both demanded and given. This includes pre-sport massage to prevent injury, therapeutic massage to find and treat injuries as they occur and post-sport massage to prevent injuries that occur during activity from developing.
Sports Massage, under the skilful hands of the Therapist releases muscle tension and restores homeostasis (balance) to the musculo-skeletal systems. Sports massage given over a regular period may help athletes prevent injuries which might otherwise be caused by overuse. Regular activity can cause a tension build up leading to stresses on the joints, tendons and ligaments as well as the muscles. It is the Therapist’s aim to treat and relieve this stress tension and fatigue to enable the athlete to continue to train.
DO YOU HAVE TO BE AN ATHLETE TO BENEFIT FROM SPORTS MASSAGE?
Absolutely not!! Anyone can benefit from this. In our everyday life we put our bodies through stresses and strains resulting in tension and overuse. Workplace assessments have become the norm as sitting in the wrong kind of chair can cause potential back, shoulder and neck problems and using a computer over a period of time could lead to repetitive strain injury. Sports massage can help to relieve symptoms for conditions such as a stiff neck, Stress, tensions in the shoulder and back, sprains and strains to name a few. Pain relief from these conditions can be achieved through sports massage.
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
Focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles, and is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain.
As your Therapist I have a responsibility to take a full medical history, checking for any contraindications that may arise from the information you give me. For example, allergies, illnesses and the time frame in which your injury occurred. I will do a full assessment of your injury including some simple tests and then treat accordingly.
